Speed skating is frequently pointed out as an example of gender equality in sports and it integrates, for several years now, principles of equity that are shown in concrete forms.
Athletes of both genders compete under the same regulations and in similar tournaments, benefiting of the same recognition, from the training ranks to the highest levels.
This has been evident throughout all Terras do Infante editions, the balanced participation between genres has been a distinctive characteristic of the event. In 2025, 340 female skaters and 331 male skaters were competing, figures that confirm the representativeness and strong involvement of female athletes.
Besides its competitive dimension, this approach has a positive impact in sports training, being an incentive to the participation of young athletes, promoting similar opportunities and reinforcing values such as merit, respect and inclusion.
Speed skating claims itself not only as a sport of high technical and physical demand but also as a positive example of balance and equity in the European sports context.
